Work, Mind and Body; Finding a Balance

A professional woman is she who participates in the workforce contributing her quota to the economy. She is skilled, learned and empowered and earns her living in her occupation.

As a woman she is called to be competent in in her career and at the same time be completely efficient in running the affairs of her household as the case may be.

This is even more challenging when there is a child or children depending on their ages and needs.

How she is able to keep up especially in a male dominated society where gender is not a factor in considering efficiency or output, is to maintain the right frame of mind, ensuring mental clarity and emotional stability to tackle the challenges posed to the professional woman.

The key is finding a balance between work, body and mind. She must resolve to live healthy without which every goal accomplishment or pursuit may end in futility.

Morphologically women generally have a higher percentage of body fat than Men. Fat content is 25% for women at normal size compared to 15% for men. All other things being equal such as age and exercise levels, women require fewer calories per kilogram of body weight than men do.

Female hormones make it easier to convert food into fat, furthermore women more often do the cooking in the households and this may predispose them to eating more than required.

In fat prone women birth control pills may cause the body to produce increased amount of fat. Estrogen aka the “female hormone” causes increased deposition of fat.

As a matter of fact after the age of forty the key to keeping fit is fat calorie control and exercise.

As difficult and challenging as it is for the woman who seems to have all her hands full all of the time, the importance of healthy living cannot be over emphasized. Strokes, coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes and some cancers have been directly linked to excessive weight gain.

The benefits of a healthy lifestyle outweigh the price of every sacrifice. Making simple changes in diet exercise and stress management is the key to long life, good health and productivity.

On exercise; the Center for disease control recommends that adults get at least 2hours 30minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week. This is in addition to 15minutes per week of vigorous intensity aerobics plus muscle strengthening activities of at least two days a week.

On diet; there is need to get a dietician to plan your meals. It is helpful to keep a food diary. The age-long maxim “you are what you eat” couldn’t get any realer.

Healthy living includes emotional wellness, maintain a positive attitude, rest well, and sleep for at least 7hours a day. This is a known brain booster.

Finally stay plugged in with social and spiritual groups that enrich your life.

I am concerned for the professional woman who hardly has the time to entertain any other concerns than to meet targets at her workplace and to fulfill her obligations of being mother and wife.

Your body is not an auxiliary concern, neither is your mind. The bad news is that time flies, the good news is that you are the pilot.

The power to remain fit today and in the future lies in what you do today and in the future.

It is never too late to start. Regardless of your weight, healthy living is a lifestyle recommended for everyone.
